Holidays in Côte d'Or: Vineyards, Canals & Heritage
The Côte d’Or is renowned for its gastronomy and wines, but also for its diverse landscapes. These have been shaped by geological formations and agriculture that has adapted with varied productions. Côte d’Or boasts exceptional accessibility through a dense network of roads (former national routes 5 and 6), motorways (A6, A31, A36, A38) and railways.
A Mosaic of Burgundian Landscapes
The rugged, humid and wooded landscapes of the Morvan are quite different from the rolling green pastures of the Auxois where Charolais cattle graze, or the famous Côte des Vins. The Dijon cereal plain extends southward to the Saône valley where market gardening predominates, then eastward to dairy farms before reaching the mixed cultivation and woodland of the Langres plateau to the north. It’s this diversity that makes this département a palette of extraordinary colours.
From Canals to Lakes: A Boater's Paradise
You can enjoy this Burgundian countryside by strolling along the banks of the Saône, the Centre Canal (from Loire to Saône), the Champagne-Burgundy Canal (from Marne to Saône) or the Burgundy Canal (from Yonne to Saône). The latter, at its highest point, features a 3,333-metre tunnel running beneath the town of Pouilly-en-Auxois. Five lakes of about a hundred hectares each provide the water needed for its operation and offer exceptional recreational spots.

"Côte d'Or, we absolutely love it"

Spring on the Hillsides The vineyards of the Côte de Nuits and Beaune awaken. Winegrowers prune their plots whilst the first flowers colour the dry stone walls. Walkers return to the Morvan paths where swollen rivers offer their first fishing spots.
Summer of Discovery Night markets enliven the medieval villages of the Auxois. Boaters navigate along the Burgundy Canal, stopping at the Pouilly tunnel. The artificial lakes welcome swimmers and water sports enthusiasts. Festivals resound in château courtyards.
Harvest and Autumn Colours The wine region comes alive to the rhythm of the grape harvest. The Morvan sets its forests ablaze with red and gold, a paradise for photographers and mushroom foragers. Charolais herds enjoy the last rays in the Auxois meadows.
Gourmet Winter Winemakers’ cellars offer tastings in the warmth. Dijon’s starred restaurants celebrate Burgundy truffles. The Morvan welcomes snowshoe hikers, whilst Christmas markets illuminate the medieval squares of Semur-en-Auxois.
